History of WMRIF

In June 2005, the 1st World Materials Research institute Forum (WMRIF) was organized by an initiative of NIMS in Japan. The 2nd WMRIF Forum was held at BAM in Berlin (Germany), in June 2007. At this meeting, Prof. Kishi (NIMS, Japan), the first director of the organization initiated seven working groups. It was decided that these groups should play the main role in looking for solutions to challenges in the study of material science and to further promote collaboration. Currently, more than 44 institutes for material science research from 21 countries are the participants of WMRIF. WMRIF is growing into a potent organization with an influence in developing international strategies in the field of materials study. From 2011 to 2015, Prof. Böllinghaus, Vice President of BAM, Berlin, held the presidency of WMRIF. During the 6th General Assembly, held at LLNL, CA, USA, Dr. Laurie E. Locascio, Director of the NIST Material Measurement Laboratory was elected 3rd President of WMRIF.
